U.S. federal government to pilot AI interviews for certain job applicants

The United States federal government is set to begin using artificial intelligence in the interview process for certain job applicants. The technology will initially be tested through the ‘Tech Force’ initiative, a program designed to recruit private-sector technology experts into two-year government positions. The platform CodeSignal will be utilized for the Tech Force applicant pool.

While not all federal agencies will adopt AI interviewing immediately, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recently issued guidance encouraging agencies to use AI during the hiring process. This guidance emphasizes the necessity of human oversight, particularly regarding critical personnel decisions. OPM has previously implemented AI tools to assist in preparing job descriptions.

OPM Director Scott Kupor has sought to accelerate the federal hiring process and increase the recruitment of early-career professionals to address the aging federal workforce. Currently, administrative staff within personnel offices utilize various AI programs, including Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic Claude, OpenAI ChatGPT, and Google Gemini.
