US Federal Judge blocks Trump executive order on mail-in voting
A federal judge in Massachusetts has blocked a presidential executive order that sought to tighten mail-in voting rules ahead of the November midterm elections. Judge Indira Talwani ruled that the administration cannot change electoral rules on the eve of an election, stating that the executive branch lacks the authority to regulate the electoral process.
The March decree would have required states to share voter lists with the United States Postal Service (USPS). If states failed to comply, the USPS was authorized to withhold the delivery of mail-in ballots in those regions. While a previous June ruling by Talwani limited this restriction to 23 states, Tuesday's decision extends the block nationwide following challenges from civil rights organizations like the ACLU.
Judge Talwani noted that the administration failed to provide evidence that the order was necessary to protect the integrity of the vote or to prevent fraud. She emphasized that the decree was causing confusion and threatening democratic confidence. The Trump administration has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the injunction.
