US federal judge rules immigration application freeze unlawful

A federal district court in the United States held that the indefinite, blanket suspension of immigration applications imposed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) violates the law. Judge John J. McConnell wrote that the pause, which began last winter, stopped final decisions on green cards, work permits and naturalizations for applicants from 39 nations and also halted all asylum decisions, regardless of the applicants' country of origin.

The judge emphasized that the suspension was not related to any wrongdoing by the applicants, who had fulfilled all filing requirements and paid required fees, but was solely based on their birthplaces. The ruling challenges the Trump administration’s policy that placed immigration processes in a state of legal uncertainty for countless individuals.

The decision may compel USCIS to resume processing pending cases and could lead to further legal challenges concerning immigration enforcement measures.
