US federal student loan repayment options and challenges

Following the end of the federal student loan repayment pause in September 2023, borrowers face various financial challenges. The government resumed “involuntary collection” in May 2025, and by 2026, some borrowers became subject to wage garnishment.

To manage these burdens, borrowers can contact their loan servicers regarding income-driven repayment plans. These plans may lower monthly payments to no more than 10% of discretionary income, and in some instances, the monthly amount may be $0.

Additionally, borrowers may seek deferment or forbearance. Deferment allows for a break in payments without interest accrual, whereas forbearance allows for a payment pause but interest continues to accrue on the balance.
