US fines Air France and KLM over Iraqi airspace violations
The US Department of Transportation has imposed a total fine of $425,000 on Air France and KLM for violating flight safety regulations in Iraqi airspace. The penalties stem from flights conducted below the minimum required altitude intended to protect aircraft from ground-based threats.
Between the beginning of 2022 and 2025, Air France operated more than 30 flights and KLM operated more than 100 flights through the restricted airspace while using Delta Air Lines' flight codes. Under FAA regulations, foreign airlines operating under a US carrier's code must adhere to restrictions placed on US operators in foreign airspaces where conflict or militant activity may threaten safety.
The airlines must pay $265,000 of the fine within 60 days, with the remaining balance contingent on whether further violations occur within one year. Both airlines stated that the deviations occurred due to conflicting instructions from local air traffic controllers, who reportedly directed crews to descend or refused to allow them to climb. The carriers argued these instances should have been treated as exceptions for emergency situations.
