US firms in China report rising optimism amid trade truce
Business confidence among U.S. companies operating in China has rebounded significantly following a trade truce between Washington and Beijing. According to an annual survey by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (AmCham Shanghai), 58% of the 262 companies surveyed expressed optimism regarding their five-year outlook, marking a 17-percentage-point increase from the previous year.
Profitability has also seen a notable recovery, with 78% of respondents reporting that their China operations were profitable last year, the highest level since 2019. This shift in sentiment follows efforts by both nations to stabilize bilateral relations, including a May summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Despite the improved outlook, challenges remain. Domestic competition has emerged as the primary concern for 68% of surveyed firms, overtaking geopolitical tensions as the top business hurdle. Additionally, while economic policy tensions have eased due to reduced tariffs and paused restrictions, broader issues regarding technology, security, and regulatory environments persist.
