U.S. flight cancellations on track for highest rate since 2022
U.S. flight cancellations are on pace to reach their highest rate since 2022. Data from FlightAware indicates that cancellations on U.S. carriers surged by approximately 15% this summer compared to last year.
Since the beginning of the year, U.S. carriers have canceled roughly 2% of all flights. The disruptions have been attributed to various factors, including severe winter storms, runway construction at hubs like San Francisco International Airport, air traffic control equipment outages, and congestion in major markets such as New York City and Washington, D.C.
Based on Cirium data for airports with at least 30,000 flights between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the highest cancellation rates were recorded at LaGuardia Airport (6.5%), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (5.8%), John F. Kennedy International Airport (4.2%), and Boston Logan International Airport (3.8%).
