U.S. food prices show slowing grocery inflation and rising fast food costs

U.S. food prices continue to impact consumer budgets, though the rate of inflation is slowing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the food-at-home price index remained unchanged in August 2026 but was 2.2% higher than in August 2025. While certain categories like fruits and vegetables saw price declines, other items such as eggs and nonalcoholic beverages experienced increases.

In the fast food sector, prices at limited-service restaurants rose by an average of 3.2% between August 2025 and August 2026, a rate that outpaces overall inflation. A WalletHub analysis of the 100 largest U.S. cities found significant regional disparities in affordability. In Detroit, Michigan, fast food costs represent 0.73% of the median monthly household income, whereas residents in other cities face much lower relative costs. The study notes that fast food is becoming increasingly expensive relative to median incomes across the country.
