US study finds food‑waste recycling could slash emissions by up to 99% but add thousands of tons of plastic to farmland

The Environmental Protection Agency has set a goal to cut United States food waste in half by 2030. Current estimates show about one‑third of the nation’s food supply – roughly 24 million tons annually – ends up uneaten and is often sent to landfills, where it releases methane.

Research published in Nature Food by University of Vermont postdoctoral fellow Katherine Porterfield models the impact of adopting food‑waste bans nationwide, similar to existing programs in Massachusetts and Vermont. Diverting food scraps to composting and anaerobic digestion could reduce the climate impact of food waste by up to 99 % and lower nutrient pollution (nitrogen by up to 54 % and phosphorus by up to 98 %). However, the study warns that without changes to packaging, the resulting compost could introduce as much as 20,000 tons of plastic, including microplastics, onto agricultural soils each year.

The findings highlight a major trade‑off: while nationwide food‑waste recycling offers substantial greenhouse‑gas reductions, it also raises concerns about plastic contamination of farmland, an issue that scientists are still investigating.
