US forces disable Panama-flagged vessel in Gulf of Oman

US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that a US military fighter jet used precision munitions to strike the stern of the Panama-flagged M/V Ocean Molica (also known as the Arika Sun) in the Gulf of Oman. The strike disabled the vessel's propulsion system, though no crew members were injured. CENTCOM stated the vessel had departed an Iranian port and ignored repeated warnings to comply with an ongoing naval blockade against Iran.

The blockade, which was resumed on July 14, has resulted in the disabling of four commercial vessels and the turning around of 135 ships over a three-month period. Additionally, US forces claim to have destroyed 10 tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shadow network.

Simultaneously, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated. The IRGC Navy claimed an unnamed crude oil supertanker struck a naval mine and suffered a major fire after allegedly using an unauthorized route with navigation systems turned off. Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, described the US response to Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as 'insufficient,' noting that while some conditions were met, others remain unclear.
