U.S. Forest Service proposes ending Roadless Rule protections

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Forest Service have proposed a rule to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. This regulation has historically prevented new road construction and timber harvesting in undeveloped sections of national forests. The proposal affects approximately 58.5 million acres of inventoried roadless areas nationwide, including about 62,000 acres within the Superior National Forest in Minnesota.

In a separate but related development, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed an executive order aimed at prohibiting copper-nickel mining near the Boundary Waters watershed. This decision has drawn criticism from House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who argued that the mining ban will eliminate union jobs in Minnesota’s Iron Range and shift mineral production to foreign adversaries like China and Russia. Emmer noted that the region contains significant deposits of copper, nickel, and palladium used in electronics and automobiles.
