US fuel price surges drive renewed interest in electric vehicles

Rising fuel prices in the United States are driving renewed interest in electric vehicles (EVs). According to the 2026 HERE-SBD EV Index, approximately 57% of American drivers state that gasoline prices influence their interest in EVs, while 53% are more willing to consider an electric model than they were a year ago.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have contributed to significant spikes in fuel costs, with diesel prices recently exceeding $6 per gallon on average. This shift occurs despite recent regulatory changes and the removal of federal tax credits.

Public perception of charging infrastructure is also improving. The percentage of drivers who consider the number of public charging stations “satisfactory” has risen from 28% in 2025 to 47%. Among current EV owners, 85% rate the network coverage as “good” or “very good.”
