A sample calculation for a round‑trip Chicago‑Denver trip shows a United Airlines economy fare of roughly $293, while driving the 2,000‑mile round‑trip would cost about $328 in fuel. For a solo traveler, flying is cheaper, but for families or larger groups the per‑person cost of driving falls below that of flying once hotel, meals and other expenses are considered.

Travelers are advised to compare total costs, including credit‑card points, rewards programs and ancillary expenses, to determine the most economical mode of transport for their specific situation.
