Oil prices surge above $100 amid US‑Iran strikes and Houthi attacks

Brent crude breached the $100‑a‑barrel mark for the first time since May, lifted by a wave of geopolitical tension in the Middle East. U.S. forces carried out their 13th consecutive night of airstrikes against Iranian targets, while Iran‑aligned Houthi fighters attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. The attacks have raised fears of closures to both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el‑Mandeb, two key chokepoints that together handle a large share of global oil shipments.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned that “Iran hasn’t received enough pain yet” and pledged “major military punishment” for Iran and the Houthis. In response, Kazakhstan temporarily cut oil output after its Black Sea export terminal was forced to shut, adding further supply concerns.

The oil rally sent global equity markets lower, with Indian benchmarks Nifty and Sensex opening down, European shares slipping, and the Nasdaq falling more than 2 %. Consumers in several regions felt the impact immediately: Turkey’s fuel price index rose sharply, India’s motor‑fuel prices were set to increase by 3.50 TL per litre, and the United Kingdom warned of pump prices approaching £1.60 for unleaded gasoline. Canadian drivers in Alberta reported gasoline prices near C$1.85 per litre.

Analysts note that record volumes of oil already on water are cushioning the market, but sustained disruptions at the two straits could push prices higher and deepen inflationary pressures worldwide.
