GLP-1 weight-loss drugs see surge in pediatric use and market shifts
The widespread use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications is driving significant shifts in healthcare and consumer behavior. A study published in the journal Pediatrics reveals that prescriptions for children under 12 in the United States have increased more than 300-fold since 2019. Although these drugs, including Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, are not officially approved for this age group, clinicians are increasingly prescribing them to treat severe obesity. Research indicates that 94 percent of these children have severe obesity, and 65 percent present with comorbidities such as high cholesterol or sleep apnea.
Beyond pediatric use, the medications present long-term management challenges. Clinical evidence suggests that patients may regain significant weight, such as approximately 60 percent of lost weight within a year, after discontinuing therapy. Additionally, users face nutritional risks; because up to 40 percent of weight lost can be lean muscle mass, healthcare providers are emphasizing high-quality protein intake, such as whey, to mitigate muscle loss.
Emerging concerns also include side effects and lifestyle factors. Some research suggests a potential link between GLP-1 drugs and hair loss, particularly in men. Experts also warn that the medications do not inherently change eating habits, noting that patients may struggle with weight loss plateaus if they do not address behaviors like emotional eating or inconsistent protein consumption.
