US goalkeeper Matt Freese, a Harvard graduate, shines at World Cup 2026

The United States men’s national soccer team entered the 2026 World Cup with Matt Freese as its starting goalkeeper, making him the first male goalkeeper in the tournament’s history to hold a degree from Harvard University. Freese, 27, earned an economics degree from Harvard in 2022 after pausing his studies to sign with MLS side Philadelphia Union, later moving to New York City FC.

His analytical approach, honed by his academic training, was highlighted during the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup when he saved three penalty kicks in a shoot‑out against Costa Rica to propel the United States into the semifinals. In the World Cup opener, Freese helped the U.S. secure a 4–1 victory over Paraguay, showcasing the blend of elite education and elite sport.

Freese’s background challenges common perceptions of professional footballers, illustrating how high‑level academic achievement can coexist with top‑tier athletic performance.
