X implements Brazil election filter, drawing U.S. censorship accusations
X has implemented a new mechanism called 'Brazil2026ElectionFilter' to comply with Brazilian electoral regulations for the 2026 elections. The filter, which was integrated into the 'For You' recommendation feed, prevents posts from official candidates registered with the Electoral Court from being automatically recommended to users who do not already follow those accounts.
According to X, this measure is in strict compliance with TSE Resolution No. 23,610/2019, which requires platforms to exclude official candidate profiles from recommendation algorithms, except in cases of paid promotion. The platform noted that while the change may reduce the organic visibility and reach of candidates, the accounts themselves are not suspended, and their posts remain fully accessible on their profiles.
Sarah B. Rogers, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public and Digital Diplomacy, criticized the move, labeling it 'censorship imposed by Brazil' in a social media post. She suggested the change serves as evidence of interference in the circulation of political content. This development occurs amid heightened diplomatic tensions between the United States and Brazil regarding digital platform regulation and freedom of expression.
