US government allocates US$ 1 million to campaign targeting Brazil's Supreme Court

Reports from The Guardian indicate that the United States government has allocated US$ 1 million to a project titled ‘Combating Weaponized Litigation and Censorship in Brazil’. This funding, part of the State Department’s Human Rights and Democracy Fund, is reportedly intended to support civil society groups that oppose the actions of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF), which they characterize as judicial overreach and censorship.

This allocation is part of a broader redirection of over US$ 175 million from the fund toward projects aligned with conservative interests globally, including initiatives focused on anti-communism, immigration, and Christian values. The reports also note that the Trump administration previously sanctioned STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes under the Magnitsky Act following pressure from Eduardo Bolsonaro.

In response, Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office (AGU) has formally requested that the Federal Police and the Prosecutor General’s Office investigate the matter. The AGU argues that if confirmed, the use of foreign capital to systematically attack national institutions constitutes a violation of Brazilian sovereignty and an attempt to interfere in the country’s political and electoral processes.
