U.S. Government buys California detention centers for $950 million

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has purchased three migrant detention centers in Adelanto, California, for $950 million. The complex, which includes Adelanto West, Adelanto East, and Desert View Annex, has a combined capacity for approximately 2,644 people.

While the federal government will now own the facilities, GEO Group, the private company that sold the properties, will continue to manage them under a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that remains in effect until December 2034. This move is part of a federal strategy to increase direct control over migrant detention infrastructure.

The acquisition has drawn scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest involving David Venturella, the interim director of ICE. Venturella previously worked for GEO Group and served as a consultant for the company. Senator Elizabeth Warren has raised concerns about his professional history, to which Venturella responded by stating he has sold his GEO Group shares and has recused himself from all matters related to the company.
