US government commits $2 billion to critical mineral supply chains
The United States government has committed over $2 billion to bolster domestic battery and critical mineral supply chains. This initiative includes a $1.4 billion Defense Department loan to Sila Nanotechnologies for silicon battery development, a $400 million loan to Sunrise Energy Metals for its scandium project in New South Wales, Australia, and a $150 million loan to Niron Magnetics for rare-earth-free magnets. Additionally, the administration is making an $85.5 million equity investment in Strategic Bauxite.
The strategy focuses on upstream production to reduce reliance on foreign imports, particularly from China. The government intends to secure priority purchasing rights over the output from several of these projects. Following the announcement of support for Sunrise Energy Metals, the company's market capitalization reached approximately $3.1 billion, significantly increasing the paper wealth of its chairman, billionaire mining financier Robert Friedland.
