U.S. government considers rerouting border wall through Texas refuge

The federal government is considering relocating a section of the border wall currently under construction in South Texas. The proposed change would move the wall from its original path on a levee adjacent to the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge into the refuge itself.

This potential shift follows a legal dispute involving the Hidalgo County Irrigation District No. 2, which accused government contractors of trespassing on its property. During a federal court hearing on October 14, Assistant U.S. Attorney Lance Duke stated that the government is looking into moving the wall to resolve the dispute with the irrigation district, while acknowledging that this move will likely trigger additional litigation from other parties.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not officially confirmed the relocation but stated it is aware of the pending lawsuit. CBP expressed its commitment to enhancing border security at the refuge while coordinating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other partners.
