U.S. government invests $300 million in quantum computing firms

The United States government is investing $300 million into quantum computing research through the CHIPS Act. The U.S. Department of Commerce is providing $100 million each in research and development subsidies to D-Wave Quantum, Rigetti Computing, and Quantinuum to accelerate the field.

Additionally, semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries has entered a $375 million agreement with the U.S. government. This five-year deal provides milestone-based subsidies to expand domestic production capacity and assist quantum hardware developers in transitioning prototypes from laboratory settings to commercial-scale production.

In a separate technological development, Fujitsu has announced the creation of a prototype quantum computer utilizing diamond spin technology. Developed in collaboration with TU Delft and QuTech, the prototype integrates tin-vacancy centers in diamonds with photonic integrated circuits. The system operates at -271.6 degrees Celsius, which is slightly warmer than superconducting quantum computers. Fujitsu aims to realize a working multi-modular quantum computer by 2027 as part of its roadmap toward practical quantum computing by 2030.
