U.S. Government Launches $5 Billion Genesis Mission AI Research Initiative

The United States announced a $5 billion investment in the Genesis Mission, an AI‑driven research program overseen by the Department of Energy and the Energy Ministry. From more than 5,000 applications, 278 projects were selected, covering AI supercomputing, open‑source models and quantum‑computing advances. A notable $60 million sub‑program aims to use AI to lower construction and operating costs of nuclear power plants.

Phase I of the initiative placed Fermilab at the forefront of AI‑enabled accelerator control. The national laboratory will lead a project to develop machine‑learning algorithms for stabilising superconducting radio‑frequency cavities, a critical component of particle accelerators, and will support eight additional projects spanning collider data, neutrino experiments and high‑performance computing. Partnerships include other U.S. labs, universities and industry firms such as xLight Inc. The effort is intended to demonstrate how AI can accelerate discovery, improve prediction accuracy and reduce operational complexity across facilities like the PIP‑II linac, SLAC’s LCLS‑SC, Brookhaven’s Electron‑Ion Collider and others.
