US government moves to restore Anthropic's Fable 5 AI model

The U.S. administration is nearing a decision to permit Anthropic to reinstate access to its Fable 5 artificial‑intelligence model, which has been offline for about 15 days following a security‑risk intervention by the Trump government. Sources say the remaining restrictions could be lifted as early as next week, with talks expected to continue over the weekend.

The Commerce Department has already allowed limited access to Anthropic’s Mythos 5 security‑focused model for a select group of trusted users. Trade officials such as Howard Luttner have acknowledged the company’s cooperation, stating the firm “has cooperated positively with the government.”

Developers have lauded Fable 5, with one industry outlet describing it as “the best programming model in the world.” Stripe reportedly used the model to rewrite a 50‑million‑line codebase in a single day, highlighting its potential productivity gains. While the Pentagon and the National Security Agency still need to give final approval, other agencies have concluded that the model can return safely to public use.
