Migration Policy Institute report: 980,000 deportations under Trump

A report by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) reveals that the Trump administration has overseen approximately 980,000 deportations during the first 18 months of his second term, spanning from January 20, 2025, to July 31, 2026. The analysis was conducted using data obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests because the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ceased publishing detailed deportation and removal statistics in January 2025.

Key findings indicate that approximately 69% of these deportations involved individuals intercepted at the border. About 31%, or 300,000 people, were immigrants arrested within the interior of the United States. The report also notes that only 20% of the 980,000 deportees had been convicted of a crime. Among immigrants who had resided in the U.S. for two or more years, 71% had no criminal record.

While the deportation pace has increased compared to the Biden administration, it remains below the administration's stated goal of one million deportations per year and significantly lower than the levels seen in the early 2000s. Human rights organizations have expressed concern regarding the impact of these policies on due process and the potential for voter intimidation.
