US government seeks expanded access to medical records amid privacy concerns

The United States government is seeking increased access to medical records at a time when data protections are perceived to be weakening. While the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulates hospitals, physicians, and insurers, it does not cover much of the health data generated through mobile applications, internet searches, DNA testing companies, or wearable devices.

Even within the scope of HIPAA, certain records can be shared, sold, or handed to the government without explicit consent. Concerns are rising regarding the efficacy of data anonymization, as research suggests that removing identifying information may not be sufficient to prevent individuals from being traced. This gap in privacy is particularly significant as government efforts to collect health data expand both domestically and internationally.
