Republican lawmakers in Washington and California have written to Democratic governors, urging them to pause climate‑related programs they say raise gasoline prices. In Washington, senators claim the cap‑and‑trade carbon tax and low‑carbon fuel standard add about 60 cents per gallon, while California Republicans allege a combined surcharge of $1.15 per gallon from state climate policies. Analysts are also warning that renewable portfolio standards (RPS) imposed by many states are inflating electricity bills. Compliance costs average 4.3 % of retail electricity bills in 2024, soaring to over 15 % in places like the District of Columbia. Studies find retail prices in RPS states are 11‑17 % higher than in non‑RPS states, prompting calls to reconsider or repeal these mandates as the financial burden on ratepayers becomes more visible.
