US Greek system faces scrutiny over hazing and safety

The Greek system on American university campuses is facing intense scrutiny due to reports of violent initiation rites, excessive alcohol consumption, and illegal drug activity. Data from Hazing Info indicates that North America has averaged two hazing-related deaths annually since 1838. Recent incidents include an 18-year-old at Northern Arizona University dying from alcohol poisoning and a student in Louisiana passing away following a chest-punching ritual.

Beyond physical safety, investigations have uncovered criminal activity, such as a cocaine ring operating out of two fraternities in Pennsylvania. Research also links fraternity culture to higher rates of sexual assault; a 2019 survey found that fraternity houses were the most common locations for nonconsensual sexual contact experienced by female undergraduates.

Sororities are also under criticism for social pressures and online shaming. Former members have reported being targeted for their appearance, contributing to body image issues and a trend of students using GLP-1 weight-loss drugs to meet social standards. Critics argue the system fosters alcoholism, bullying, and the objectification of women.
