U.S. grocery prices show cooling trends amid uneven category shifts

U.S. grocery prices have shown varying trends according to recent data. In August, food-at-home prices rose 2.2% compared to the previous year, with forecasts for 2026 projecting a 2.4% increase.

More recent data indicates a slight cooling, with grocery prices dropping 0.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis in September, leaving them 1.8% higher than a year earlier. This rate remains below the overall inflation rate of 3.7%.

Price changes have been uneven across different food categories. Costs decreased for meat, ice cream, bread, butter, and eggs, with egg prices notably dropping more than 20% following a bird flu-related shortage. Conversely, prices for coffee, candy, and fresh fruit have seen increases. Meat prices specifically dipped 0.9% in September, driven by reductions in items such as bacon.
