U.S. gubernatorial elections feature record Black candidates and partisan streaks

The upcoming gubernatorial elections feature a record number of Black candidates seeking office across various political parties. This surge in representation occurs as some Southern states move to eliminate majority-Black districts. Currently, Maryland Governor Wes Moore is the only Black governor serving in the United States. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms is campaigning to become the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history, facing Republican nominee Rick Jackson in a close race.

Simultaneously, several states are experiencing historic partisan dominance in the governor's office. Eighteen states are currently in the midst of record-breaking winning streaks for either the Republican or Democratic parties. For example, Utah holds a 12-election Republican streak, while Oregon maintains an 11-election Democratic streak. Several other states, including South Dakota and Colorado, are positioned to tie all-time party records during this election cycle.
