Medicare open enrollment begins with major 2027 coverage changes

Medicare open enrollment for the 2027 coverage year begins on October 15 and runs through December 7. During this period, beneficiaries can switch between traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, or change their prescription drug coverage.

Several significant changes are slated for 2027. The annual out-of-pocket cap for Medicare Part D drugs is set to increase to $2,400, up from $2,100 in 2026. Additionally, the standard Part D deductible is expected to rise from $615 to $700. To assist with cash flow, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan will allow patients to spread these costs into monthly installments.

Other notable shifts include the end of temporary federal Part D premium subsidies and a 3.6% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, which is projected to add approximately $75 per month for many recipients.

In some regions, such as Wisconsin, insurers are withdrawing certain Medicare Advantage and drug plans, reducing options for local residents. Meanwhile, officials in Michigan have issued warnings to seniors regarding potential scams and high-pressure sales tactics targeting Medicare beneficiaries during the enrollment window.
