US health officials consider relaxing peptide regulations
Concerns are rising regarding health misinformation and the unregulated use of peptides. While peptides serve essential biological functions, such as regulating insulin, many trending versions marketed online lack clear evidence of safety or efficacy in humans, having often only been tested on animals.
In the United States, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has expressed support for peptide use and has directed the FDA to relax regulations on these substances. This shift may allow specialized pharmacies to manufacture and sell popular peptides directly to consumers for self-injection. The administration notes that these substances can be sourced from chemical companies as research chemicals, though monitoring whether they are used for human medical purposes remains a challenge.
This trend follows a broader pattern of digital health misinformation. A survey conducted in the United Kingdom found that 60 percent of adults feel overwhelmed by the volume of health advice online, with nearly half reporting they have been misled by wellness products advertised on social media.
