US health officials urge vaccination against seasonal respiratory viruses
Health departments in New Hampshire and Rhode Island are urging residents to seek vaccinations against seasonal respiratory viruses, including the flu, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
In Rhode Island, health officials noted that during the previous season, hundreds of residents were hospitalized due to these viruses. Director of Health Jerry Larkin stated, “Vaccination is your best protection.” The department reported that 861 people were hospitalized with the flu resulting in 54 deaths, while 679 were hospitalized with COVID-19 resulting in 31 deaths.
New Hampshire’s Department of Health and Human Services is also encouraging citizens to take steps to protect themselves, noting that immunizations offer the best protection against infection.
Vaccination recommendations vary by age and risk level. In Rhode Island, the flu shot is recommended for everyone six months and older, while COVID-19 vaccines are advised for various age groups, including annual doses for children 6 months to 2 years and everyone 19 and older. RSV vaccines are recommended for specific groups, including infants, young children, and older adults.
