US heating costs projected to rise 21% for the 2026-2027 winter season

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that American households using heating fuel will face an average expenditure of $2,115 between November 2026 and March 2027. This represents a 21% increase compared to the previous winter. While heating fuel prices are expected to rise by 34%, overall consumption is anticipated to drop by 9%.

Regional impacts are expected to be significant, particularly in the Northeast. Specific national projections for the season include $640 for natural gas (a 9% decrease), $1,196 for electricity (a 4% increase), and $1,246 for propane (a 3% decrease).

In response to rising costs, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has announced the release of $12.7 million in additional state funds to bolster heating assistance for the 2026-2027 winter season. These funds will supplement the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program (CEAP), specifically targeting low-income households, seniors, and individuals with special needs. The assistance aims to support those using delivered fuels such as heating oil, kerosene, and propane. Benefits are expected to range between $355 and $705 depending on household size and income.
