US heavy-duty trailer orders surge in August

US heavy-duty trailer orders saw a significant surge in August, driven primarily by fleet replacement activity. According to data from FTR, net orders reached 24,144 units, marking a 43 per cent increase month-on-month and a 221 per cent rise compared to the same period last year.

This surge concluded the 2026 trailer order season on a strong note, with total seasonal orders reaching 212,116 units, up 13 per cent from the previous season. Analysts suggest that as the North American Class 8 truck pre-buy cycle concludes, capital expenditure is shifting toward trailer replacement, supported by solid freight rates and market capacity constraints.

Despite the growth in orders, the industry faces challenges. FTR Senior Analyst Dan Moyer noted that while order performance is encouraging, recovery remains uneven across segments due to elevated equipment costs and selective spending. Additionally, trade measures are increasingly impacting manufacturing costs for trailers across North America.
