U.S. High School Sports Officials Urge Heat Illness Prevention Ahead of Fall Season

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, led by Dr. Alex Diamond, has issued resources and guidance for schools nationwide to mitigate heat‑related illnesses as fall sports practices begin. Coaches are urged to adjust or cancel outdoor sessions when temperatures and heat indices rise, ensure proper hydration, adopt emergency action plans, and recognize that heat risks affect all outdoor activities, including marching band and cheer.

In Mississippi, the State Department of Health has echoed these warnings, recommending pre‑participation physicals, the use of padded helmet covers such as Guardian Caps to reduce head‑injury risk, and strict concussion protocols. Schools are advised to provide cooling stations, monitor athletes for signs of heat stress or head injury, and have trained staff ready to respond. The combined guidance aims to protect millions of student‑athletes as extreme heat and poor air quality persist into the early fall months.
