US home internet costs rise as promotional rates expire

American consumers are facing rising costs for home internet, with the average monthly bill exceeding $80. A survey by CNET indicates that over 63% of adults in the United States experienced year-over-year increases in their internet service prices.

Many of these price hikes are attributed to promotional rates that expire after an initial period, causing monthly bills to potentially double. Providers often use introductory discounts to attract customers, only to revert to higher standard rates once the promotion ends.

To mitigate these costs, experts suggest evaluating actual bandwidth needs. Many households may be paying for high-tier gigabit speeds that exceed their requirements for streaming, remote work, and smart devices. Downgrading to a lower speed tier, such as 300 Mbps, can provide immediate savings while still supporting typical household activities.
