U.S. hospitality employers are rapidly expanding their workforce in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In the 11 host metros, job postings rose an average of 30.3% in May compared with the January‑April average, while postings in non‑host markets fell 23.8%. Philadelphia led the surge with an 83% increase, followed by Boston (61%), Atlanta (55%) and Houston (54%). Other host areas such as New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area also posted gains.

The hiring spike added roughly 172,000 new non‑farm payroll jobs in May, outpacing expectations. Hospitality employment is up 5.2% year‑over‑year—about 2.5 times the national average—and wage growth in the sector sits at 4.8%, above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Capacity utilization reached 88.5%, but revenue per available room growth lags, raising concerns that labor cost increases may outstrip revenue gains.

Analysts warn that the front‑loaded hiring could create a post‑tournament labor surplus if visitor numbers fall short of projections, potentially pressuring margins for hotel chains and related supply‑chain firms.
