U.S. House Passes War Powers Resolution to Halt Trump’s Iran Campaign

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 214‑208 to adopt a concurrent war‑powers resolution directing President Donald Trump to cease U.S. military operations against Iran unless Congress explicitly authorizes them. The measure, sponsored by Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal, won bipartisan support from four Republicans—Tom Barrett, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson and Thomas Massie—who broke with their party.

While the resolution is largely symbolic and does not bind the president, it marks a second rebuke from the House since the conflict began in February. Hours later, the Senate rejected a similar joint resolution 49‑47, leaving the President’s war‑making authority largely intact. The war has already claimed 18 U.S. service members and injured hundreds, fueling criticism in Congress and heightening scrutiny ahead of the November midterm elections. The ongoing hostilities have also driven oil prices above $100 a barrel, raising broader economic concerns.

Lawmakers argue the conflict lacks a clear mission, strategy or end goal and that Congress has not been consulted as required by the Constitution’s War Powers Act. The vote underscores growing bipartisan frustration with the administration’s handling of the Iran war and signals continued legislative pressure on the executive.
