U.S. House Committee approves $255 million to deepen Port of Long Beach channel

The U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved the Water Resources Development Act of 2026, allocating roughly $250 million to deepen the main shipping channel at the Port of Long Beach. The funding, split between the federal government and the port, will allow larger vessels to enter, improve cargo flow, and cut emissions from ships idling offshore.

Congressman Robert Garcia said the investment is “a huge win for Long Beach, for our workers and for people across the country who depend on goods moving through our port every single day.” Port of Long Beach CEO Dr. Noel Hacegaba added that the legislation will “advance our Deep Draft Navigation Project, improve navigational safety, maximize cargo efficiency and strengthen the flow of goods across the United States.” The project is part of a broader effort to modernize U.S. water infrastructure and bolster supply‑chain resilience.
