U.S. House Committee approves digital asset tax legislation

The House Ways and Means Committee has approved the Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act, marking the first legislative step toward establishing a specific tax structure for digital assets. The bill passed the committee with a bipartisan 38-5 vote and now moves toward a full vote in the House of Representatives.

According to Committee Chairman Rep. Jason Smith, the legislation aims to provide the regulatory certainty necessary to support the goal of making the United States the “crypto capital of the world.” The act is designed to modernize the tax code by streamlining reporting requirements, clarifying the tax treatment of crypto mining and staking, and establishing parity between digital assets and traditional financial assets.

The legislation seeks to address compliance challenges and uncertainty within the estimated $2 trillion digital asset economy, providing clearer rules for American consumers and investors.
