U.S. House committees subpoena New Jersey over noncitizen voter registrations
Two U.S. House committees have issued a joint subpoena to the New Jersey State Department following an investigation into the registration of approximately 6,600 noncitizens on the state’s voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024.
House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan and House Administration Committee Chair Bryan Steil characterized the state’s previous responses as “inadequate,” noting that the department has provided only 12 documents to date. Lawmakers are seeking clarity on how a purported software error at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission led to these registrations and why the noncitizens remained on the rolls.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has attributed the issue to a “software error,” though the operating company, Idemia, has denied the accusation. Congressional leaders expressed concerns that the failure to identify and remove ineligible voters impacts the application of federal law and the civil liberties of American voters.
