US House Democrats Probe DHS Immigration Funding and Oversight

The House approved a $70 billion immigration‑enforcement package that expands ICE, Border Patrol and technology funding. Democratic Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon raised concerns about transparency, citing alleged DHS contracting abuses linked to former Secretary Kristi Noem, including a $220 million advertising campaign and a $60,000 signing bonus.

Separately, the House Homeland Security Committee, led by Rep. Debbie Dingell and Rep. Joaquin Castro, launched an investigation after internal documents showed $2.3 billion in unspent DHS funds from 2024‑25 and that 42% of a $1.8 billion border‑security grant program remained unused. The probe also highlighted a prior $12 million fine on a contractor for overcharging. Hearings with DHS officials are scheduled for July.
