US House passes AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act

The US House of Representatives has passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act (H.R. 979) via a voice vote. The bipartisan legislation aims to protect AM radio access in vehicles, which broadcasters argue is essential for providing lifesaving emergency information and news to the public.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where a companion piece of legislation, S. 315, has been awaiting action since being approved by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee in April 2025. The House measure was led by Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ).

In the Senate, the bill is supported by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ed Markey (D-MA). While the Senate bill currently has enough cosponsors to reach a filibuster-proof majority, its progress may depend on timing. If floor action is not taken before the Senate's upcoming recess starting October 4, the mandate may not reach a vote until the post-election session in mid-November or December.
