A central provision of the legislation grants the President authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian oil and natural gas. The bill also targets Russia’s energy and defense sectors, financial institutions, and the so-called ‘shadow fleet’ of tankers used to evade sanctions. Additionally, it extends sanctions on Iran’s energy and weapons sectors through 2031.

New Delhi noted that it has discussed the implications of such measures with US officials and remains committed to protecting its trade and economic interests. While the bill provides the authority for high tariffs, it does not mandate them automatically; the final decision rests with the US administration.
