Harvard University accused by U.S. House committees of prioritizing China ties over security
A joint report by two Republican-led U.S. House committees alleges that Harvard University has prioritized its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over American national security. The 53-page report, titled ‘Compromised Independence: CCP Influence at Harvard University’, claims that Harvard researchers co-authored over 140 academic papers with scholars from China’s ‘Seven Sons of National Defense’—universities closely linked to China’s military-industrial complex.
The investigation highlights several areas of concern, including research in dual-use technologies like robotics and magnetic materials. It also scrutinizes ‘Harvard Global’, a non-profit entity that committees suggest may have been used to circumvent federal laws regarding the disclosure of foreign donations. The report notes that Harvard has received over $600 million in funding from China, a figure significantly higher than other major U.S. institutions.
Additionally, the report questions Harvard’s compliance with sanctions, noting a public health program that may have included members of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, an entity sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury.
Harvard University has denied the allegations, stating the report contains ‘distorted facts’ and asserting that the university follows all federal national security guidelines and disclosure requirements for international research and cooperation.
