US House Republicans account for most taxpayer-funded mail spending

An analysis of congressional expenditure records reveals that Republican members of the US House of Representatives accounted for nearly three-quarters of taxpayer-funded mail spending during the first quarter of 2026. Republicans spent approximately $1.09 million on franked mail, while Democrats spent just over $371,000 out of a total House expenditure of $1.47 million.

Franking privileges allow lawmakers to send official communications, such as newsletters and federal program notices, to constituents without using personal or campaign funds. While these cannot be used for campaign purposes, the five highest-spending Republican representatives collectively spent more on franked mail than all House Democrats combined during this period.

Representative Jim Baird of Indiana recorded the highest spending at $125,603. Other significant spenders included Representative Randy Feenstra of Iowa with $86,739 and Representative David Schweikert of Arizona with $83,808. The report notes that House Republicans have consistently outspent Democrats in this category every year during the current decade.
