US household debt reaches $1.26 trillion amid rising delinquency

Recent financial data indicates rising debt levels in the United States, with credit card balances reaching approximately $1.26 trillion in the second quarter of 2026. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, while delinquency rates have seen slight improvements, 4.7% of outstanding household debt remains in some stage of delinquency.

As debt collection becomes a concern for many households, questions have arisen regarding the protection of retirement assets. While wages and bank accounts are subject to specific garnishment rules, the regulations governing 401(k) accounts differ from those applied to ordinary liquid assets.

Additionally, homeowners seeking liquidity are weighing the differences between Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs) and home equity loans. HELOCs function as a revolving line of credit that can be drawn from over a period of time, whereas home equity loans provide a one-time, lump-sum payment. Experts suggest these equity-based options often provide lower interest rates than credit cards for those needing extra cash.
