U.S. housing market shift sees renters outnumbering buyers in major cities

A shift in the American housing market has led to renters outnumbering homebuyers in several major cities. Driven by rising home prices, high mortgage rates, and insufficient housing supply, many households are being pushed toward leasing rather than purchasing property.

In New York City, 51.9% of households rented in the fourth quarter, the highest share among the 75 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. This trend is attributed to structural factors, including a high density of apartment buildings and a significant price gap for single-family homes. Los Angeles has also emerged as a prominent renter-majority market.

While many individuals aim for homeownership to avoid rising rental costs and utility expenses, the financial barriers remain high. Prospective buyers face the challenges of substantial down payments, strict mortgage approval processes, and the high cost of living.
