US Housing Market: The Financial Debate Between Renting and Buying

The debate between renting and buying homes in the United States involves complex financial trade-offs. According to Bank of America, approximately 53% of Americans believed buying a home was superior to renting or living with family as of 2023, a notable increase from 2024 and 2025 when fewer than half of respondents held that view.

Data from Zillow suggests that homeownership typically reaches a breakeven point after six years, at which time the costs of ownership are surpassed by the benefits of equity building. However, experts warn that buying involves significant additional expenses beyond mortgage payments, including property taxes, homeowners insurance, and unexpected repairs.

Financial literacy advocates note that for some, particularly within Black communities seeking to build generational wealth, renting can be a strategic choice to avoid being ‘house-rich and cash-poor.’ Research from Realtor.com indicates a significant monthly cost gap in the 50 largest U.S. metropolitan areas, where the average monthly cost to buy a starter home was $2,589, compared to $1,669 for renting—a difference of $920 per month.
